Dorothy Visits London

This post, Dorothy Eats: On the Road – London, is the kickoff for a series outlining my recent European holiday. I had such a great time, that I wanted to share the highlights and hidden gems. Future posts will take us to Athens, Santorini and Crete. I hope you enjoy sharing my European adventure!

At long last I was able to take a trip! A nice long one, three weeks, to be exact. We spent a few days in London and the rest of the time in Greece. It felt wonderful to be out in the world again!

How it all began…

A friend of mine, Jim, (a friend since middle school) has always wanted to go to Greece, and after several years of trying to coordinate the trip, at last everything aligned and we were able to go. His daughter joined us and off we went. Jim is a globe trotter and has a wonderful blog called Roadboys Travels, where he journals about his travels including wonderful photography. To learn more about where we went, I suggest reading his blog because all I’m going to talk about is the food!

So, first stop in our culinary holiday was London where we had a wonderful afternoon tea at Sketch. Meredith, our other traveling companion, made the reservation based on her research, but the idea was enthusiastically supported by several of my family members who had been there. Sketch is hard to define, it’s a very quirky and artsy place with many cafes and bars. We went for tea which was a beautiful enfolding of treats both savory and sweet at a leisurely pace.

  • The first course was a quail egg nestled on a mornay sauce and served with a spoon of caviar on the side. (1st image)
  • Next came a tower of finger sandwiches and pastries, along with several small dishes of additional jewel-like pastries. (2nd & 3rd images)
  • One of the things Sketch is famous for is their bathroom. It’s a cluster of stalls that are egg shaped. (4th image)

After a couple of nights in London we headed to Athens. (look for that post in a week or so).
