Return to Athens – In Search of a Gyro
See previous post: On the Road – Crete
Our return to Athens capped off a marvelous vacation! On our last night we went to Victory Cafe. We were in search of a Gyro since we hadn’t had any and were about to leave.
Our server, who I believe is the owner, was charming, called us all “darling”, and was very entertaining. She got everyone toasting each other with shot glasses of raki and other liquors, and brought us a chocolate explosion of dessert! It was delicious and fun.
I ordered the Fruit Drink (pictured) which was a puree of fresh fruits and appropriately served with an umbrella, the perfect end of vacation touch.
Final Thoughts
Jim travels all the time and is a big fan of Airbnb’s. I hadn’t had much experience traveling this way, I always stayed in hotels, and both types of lodging have a place. But I was so impressed with our hosts and our accommodations. I’d like to give a shout out to our wonderful hosts:
- John and Biscuit in London. A very comfortable home and a charming host with a great sense of humor, we enjoyed a nice long chat our first night in, with Biscuit his much adored daschund asleep and snoring in his arms.
- Antonis in Santorini at MyBozer
- Maria in Rethymno
- Donya in Athens.
These are people who are hoping to make their living as hosts for Airbnb and hope to open more of them if things go well. They are dedicated to giving you the best experience possible, and my hats off to them all! Their houses and presence really enhanced this trip.
As always, every time I leave Greece, I start planning my next trip back!
