On the Road in Athens
…Next Stop on the road: Athens (Continued from On the Road – London)
This was my 6th trip to Greece! Clearly I love going, and Athens is always the first place I visit when I arrive, and the last place before I leave for home. There is a ton to do and see in Athens, and I never feel like I scratch the surface. So is it any surprise that Dorothy Eats On the Road would also start and end in Athens?
When we arrived in Athens we spent our first day touring the Acropolis Museum. Fortunately Jim found an Air B&B at both the beginning and end of the trip within walking distance of the Acropolis and the Plaka. I loved seeing all the plants growing out of the walls all around the Acropolis.
A great meal in Athens
That night we had dinner at Scholarchio in the Plaka. Last time I dined there was 2014 and I was happy to see it survived the pandemic. Scholarchio has a set menu and pricing. We ordered the dinner for two and it was plenty for the three of us. You choose your dishes from an array of entrees and side dishes. I had moussaka three times on this trip and theirs was the best. Give Scholarchio a try when you’re looking for great food in Athens.

Our second day we took Diane Kochilias walking tour of Athens. I love Diane’s show on PBS, and have been a fan of hers for a long time. She has published numerous Greek cookbooks and sells wonderful Greek products on her site. There were 7 of us taking the tour and our tour guide was a lovely woman named Lida with a very impressive culinary background which includes being a sommelier. We walked and sampled our way around the Syntagma area of Athens. I was able to talk to a baker to find out his technique for getting an extra crunchy filo, and tasted a soft ricotta like cheese that’s a taste I remember from childhood. We enjoyed bites of pastry, savory hand pies, glacéd fruit, Greek coffee, Loukoumathes (doughnut holes), and finished the tour sampling wines. It was a lovely tour and Diane was able to join us for part of it (so I could fangirl all over her!)

Thanks to both Lida and Diane we were given a list of places to eat in Athens, Santorini, and Crete. With this list as our guide we were able to have some wonderful meals throughout our trip.
