Recently my cousin Lyn sent me an Instagram post about the many health benefits of eating figs in olive oil. This is an ancient remedy which is believed to help create clear skin and cure digestive issues.
Figs are a healthy fruit containing around 3 g of fiber, good for digestion, and are believed to lower blood pressure and stabilize blood sugar. Olive oil is a very healthy fat with strong anti-inflammatory properties, monounsaturated fats, and large amounts of antioxidants. It’s no surprise that these two super foods would make a very healthy combination.

40 Figs in 40 Days

The classic instructions for this remedy combine 40 figs in a jar with enough extra virgin olive oil to cover the figs, and place in a cool dark place for 40 days. Then eat one fig with olive oil daily on an empty stomach for 40 days. There are several variations which suggest eating two figs a day, one in the AM and one before bedtime, and a quick alternative of marinating 4 figs in olive oil for 4 days. I guess it depends on what you are trying to heal and how much time you have to invest in the process.
I’m going for the old school technique, so I have my 40 figs sitting in olive oil for 40 days. I chose to use organic figs and organic extra virgin olive oil because I want to create the purist result.
After the 40 days are up (September 25), I’ll start consuming one a day and check in with you around day 20 to let you know how the experiment is going. Hopefully by day 40 my skin will virtually sparkle, and my micro biomes and pre and probiotics will be happy campers!
